El Tres de Mayo de 1808 - Francisco de Goya (1814): An example of Romanticism in 19th century art, commemorating Spanish resistance to Napoleon's armies during the 1808 occupation in the Peninsular War.
Romanticism has been characterized as "The Five I's": Imagination, Intuition, Idealism, Inspiration, and Individuality.

Imagination released:
Imagination was emphasized over rationalism. This was a backlash against the foundations from the Neoclassical period or “Age of Reason.” Imagination was considered necessary for creating all art. British writer Samuel Taylor Coleridge called it “intellectual intuition.”
Topic: Imagination released

Goya's reliance on the light of a large lantern pre-saged the later era of impressionism, which held that the essence of imagery was the interplay of light. Diverging from the traditions of Christian art and traditional depictions of war, this painting has no distinct precedent, and is acknowledged as one of the first paintings of the modern era.
