GI System Intro - Unit 2

Layers of tubular GI organs

The dog jejunum on glass slide 160 is particularly advantageous for understanding the concentric layers in the tubular organs of the GI system. Be able to identify the following structures:

Tunica mucosa

     epithelium and mucosal glands
     lamina propria (loose c.t.)
     muscularis mucosae - smooth muscle

tunica submucosa (loose c.t.)

     submucosal glands (not present here)
     submucosal plexus (autonomic ganglia)

tunica muscularis

     inner circular smooth muscle
     outer longitudinal smooth muscle
     myenteric plexus

tunica serosa/adventitia

Remember that some of the structural elements listed above vary in occurrence and/or quantity, depending upon the organ and species of animal being studied. One should be continually cognizant of the presence of the vasculature and innervation of any tissue or organ under study.
